Metro Detroit Summer Food Programs for Kids


DETROIT (WXYZ) — The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting inflation and economic instability are being felt by nearly every American. For parents, the rapidly rising cost of living as summer vacation approaches can negatively impact the millions of children in the United States who face hunger and poverty and depend on daily school meals.

Below is a list of food pantries, school districts and organizations working to fill the food void in metro Detroit this summer by providing meals for children. If you have additional resources you would like to add, please email [email protected].

Detroit Public Schools Community District providing free hot breakfast and lunch to all K-12 students.

Take-out meal, M/Th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the following location.

Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency (WMCAA) announced sponsorship of the Summer Food Service program for children 18 and under or persons under 26 who are enrolled in an educational program for the mentally or physically disabled recognized by a state or local public educational agency. Meals will be provided without regard to race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability, and there will be no discrimination during meal service.

No child is hungry is a campaign of Share Our Strength, an organization that fights hunger and poverty. No Kid Hungry has a plan to ensure these children are nourished, both during this crisis and during the recovery to follow. Through a combination of emergency grants, strategic assistance, advocacy, and awareness, No Kid Hungry helps children, families, and communities get the resources they need.
